CAPE MAY HARBOR FEST, 2008

On Saturday, June 21, 2008, the City of Cape May will host Harbor Fest, 2008. Quite simply, Harbor Fest is a celebration of seafood and song; the sea, its culture, its economy and its ecology.

Cape May’s beautiful and convenient harbor will provide the overall setting for Harbor Fest; while most land based activities will be held at or near the Nature Center. The Nature Center with its distinctive blue roofed Trucksess headquarters is readily identifiable from anywhere in the harbor. Located just adjacent to the Coast Guard Base and the Corinthian Yacht Club, the Center is situated directly ashore from the harbor’s “anchor-out” zone and across the harbor from Cape May’s well appointed marinas. Venues around the harbor will be linked by trolley furnished for the event.

What is being planned?

  • A Friday night Summer Solstice Bonfire, story telling, song fest and marshmallow roasting.
  • On Saturday, a street festival with food vendors, beer tent, live entertainment, art and craft vendors and related displays.
  • A scallop cook-off that will see top Cape May chefs go head-to-head in culinary competition.
  • Also on Saturday, a kayak & canoe regatta in the harbor…a point-to-point navigational challenge, as well as birding programs for boaters and bathers.
  • Other activities planned for Saturday include a blessing of the commercial fleet, a wreath laying at the fisherman’s memorial, Harbor Safari’s, Wharf Tours, a Coast Guard air to sea rescue demonstration, junior fishing contest and kayak eco-tours.
  • Transportation via a trolley service will be provided from the Washington Street Mall and the Harbor Fest activities.
  • A water taxi linking the different harbor venues will also be available.
  • Weather permitting, MAC may also offer an Around Cape Island Cruise on Saturday and Sunday.

Since its inception as a whaling village in the 17th Century, Cape May’s economy and culture has been linked to the sea. But with the promise comes a challenge. Harbor Fest is intended to heighten awareness and appreciation of this fragile resource.
